Why has yellow gold gone so out of style?
I love it, I think white gold looks cheaper and reminds me of Sterling Silver, which is cheap. Does anyone still love yellow gold?
Yes, a lot of people still love yellow gold. Many designers such as Juicy Couture, Louis Vuitton, and Coach still make yellow gold jewelry and it is very popular. White gold is catching up but will probably never be as popular.

Bob Dylan [LP] $22.98 Bob Dylan’s first album is a lot like the debut albums by the Beatles and the Rolling Stones — a sterling effort, outclassing most, if not all, of what came before it in the genre, but similarly eclipsed by the artist’s own subsequent efforts. The difference was that not very many people heard Bob Dylan on its original release (originals on the early-’60s Columbia label are choice collectibles) because it was recorded with a much smaller audience and musical arena in mind. At the time of Bob Dylan’s release, the folk revival was rolling, and interpretation was considered more important than original composition by most of that audience. A significant portion of the record is possessed by the style and spirit of Woody Guthrie, whose influence as a singer and guitarist hovers over “Man of Constant Sorrow” and “Pretty Peggy-O,” as well as the two originals here, the savagely witty “Talkin’ New York” and the poignant “Song to Woody”; and it’s also hard to believe that he wasn’t aware of Jimmie Rodgers and Roy Acuff when he cut “Freight Train Blues.” But on other songs, one can also hear the influences of Bukka White, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie Johnson, and Furry Lewis, in the playing and singing, and this is where Dylan departed significantly from most of his contemporaries. Other white folksingers of the era, including his older contemporaries Eric Von Schmidt and Dave Van Ronk, had incorporated blues in their work, but Dylan’s presentation was more in your face, resembling in some respects (albeit in a more self-conscious way) the work of John Hammond, Jr., the son of the man who signed Dylan to Columbia Records and produced this album, who was just starting out in his own career at the time this record was made. There’s a punk-like aggressiveness to the singing and playing here. His raspy-voiced delivery and guitar style were modeled largely on Guthrie’s classic ’40s and early-’50s recordings, but the assertiveness of the bluesmen he admires al… |

Live at the Continental Club: The Austin Experience $11.99 If Junior Brown were going to record a live album anywhere, it may as well be at the Continental Club in Austin, TX; Brown played a five-year Sunday night residency there in the 1990s that helped launch the maverick picker into the national limelight, and if there was ever a town made to embrace Brown’s wild fusion of country, rock, surf, jazz, and anything else that could make its way through his fingers onto his “guit-steel,” it’s the Texas capitol that’s also one of America’s greatest cities for all sorts of live music. Brown and his band made their way back to their old stomping grounds for a two-day recording party in April 2005; 52 minutes’ worth of the results are collected on Live at the Continental Club: The Austin Experience, and this disc captures Junior in typically dazzling form on his “guit-steel.” Brown is a casually masterful picker who can seemingly excel in any style he chooses, and from the fast-stepping honky tonk of “I Hung It Up,” the instrumental rock showcase of the closing medley, and the norte? o stylings of “Juan Charasquado” (with the great Flaco Jimenez sitting in on squeeze box), Brown burns with flash and melodic substance from front to back on this disc. This guy knows how to deliver the goods, and the wildly enthusiastic crowd here didn’t need to be enhanced for this release — this was obviously a show worth seeing, and the results are manna from heaven for guitar freaks. If this album has a flaw, it’s that Brown appears to have the not unknown Achilles’ heel of not singing and playing especially well at the same time; while his guitar work is sterling throughout, the first half of the album finds Brown sounding just a shade flat in the vocal department. But if you’re a fan, chances are you come to hear Junior play more than sing, and on that scale The Austin Experience thoroughly satisfies. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

Live in Concert 1974 $11.99 This accurately named group came about when, following a European tour by the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra in the spring of 1974, British impresario Eddie Kennedy asked the orchestra’s trumpeter, Pee Wee Erwin, to select a smaller ensemble for a tour of England, Germany, and Sweden later in the year. The resulting octet was basically a who’s who of traditional jazz: in addition to Erwin, it included trumpeter Bernie Privin, trombonist Ed Hubble, Kenny Davern and Johnny Mince on clarinet and soprano saxophone, pianist Dick Hyman, bassist Major Holley, and drummer Cliff Leeman. This recording was made over the course of two nights in Stockholm and one in Hanover, Germany, and while the sound quality is less than sterling, it is nowhere near bad enough to mute the infectious joy or to obscure the blazing virtuosity of these top-notch players. Their touring set focused on New Orleans-style jazz rather than the more tightly arranged material that was typical of the Dorsey group, and although the program does run a bit toward rather tired material (“Sweet Georgia Brown,” “Wild Man Blues,” “[Back Home Again In] Indiana”), the group delivers everything with a truly amazing level of energy and invention. Highlights include Hyman’s brilliant rendition of the Jelly Roll Morton piano showpiece “Fingerbuster,” a tasteful but not overly reverent take on Duke Ellington’s “Black and Tan Fantasy,” and a thrilling version of “Oh Sister! Ain’t That Hot?” A must for all fans of trad jazz. ~ Rick Anderson, Rovi |

Shakin’ Brains [Bonus Track] $17.99 Although few people are probably aware of the fact, Silver Mountain’s debut album, 1983’s wonderful Shakin’ Brains, served as something of a testing ground for the neo-classical metal Yngwie Malmsteen would ride to the top in the years that followed. It’s no secret that Malmsteen had been friendly with his Swedish compatriots in Silver Mountain prior to relocating to the U.S. and joining Ron Keel in Steeler, and it’s even less of a coincidence that half of the musicians responsible for this underground classic — keyboard and drum-playing siblings Jens and Anders Johansson — would go on to work with Malmsteen’s new solo project the very next year. Which should serve as further support for the claim that Silver Mountain was in fact the link between the neo-classical metal movement’s acknowledged birth at the hands of Ritchie Blackmore and Ronnie James Dio’s Rainbow and its subsequent popularization by Malmsteen, Stratovarius, et al. All of the genre’s token qualities are to be found here: the mystical, semi-fantastical lyrics, the incredible interplay between soloing guitar and keyboards, and of course the metal and the classical music elements. Sterling opener “1789″ encapsulates all of these elements to their highest degree, welding together a memorable riff that’s part driving rhythm and part piercing lead guitar, and then pummeling the listener with it at a galloping clip on its way to an explosive guitar solo. All-purpose frontman Jonas Hansson may not have the greatest command of the English language, the perfect voice (curiously, he sounds like a less potent Jeff Scott Soto), or six-string chops quite as refined and mechanically fast as the aforementioned Malmsteen, but in many ways his fiery and more instinctive style (check out his impromptu solo midway through “Looking for You”) is all the more exciting and unpredictable for it. As for his regular foil, brilliant keyboardist Jens Johansson, he too is in top form here, injecting additional highlights… |

Stealing with Style $0.99 Used – In Sterling Glass’s line of work, it’s not unusual to unearth a few family skeletons among the family heirlooms she appraises. But when she’s called in to determine the worth of a diamond brooch found tucked inside an oven mitt over at the Salvation Army thrift store, and when the appraisal of an extremely modest estate turns up an 1810 Paul Storr tea urn– hidden inside a blanket and worth at least fifty grand– things just don’t add up. The London Rock & Roll Show [Magnum/ MVD Video/DVD] $11.99 In the early ’70s, rock & roll experienced a revival of sorts in the U.S. due to the success of such movies as American Graffiti and the popular TV show Happy Days. But the revival first reached a feverish pitch in the U.K., where in August of 1972, a sterling cast of early rock & roll trailblazers united for a concert at the mammoth Wembley Stadium. The 84-minute-long London Rock & Roll Show captures the highlights from that day, as such big-name artists as Bo Diddley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, and Bill Halley & the Comets rocked out in front of thousands of dancing admirers (many of whom dressed in a retro ’50s style). You can’t go wrong with solid versions of Bo Diddley’s “Roadrunner,” Jerry Lee Lewis’ “Whole Lotta Shakin’,” Bill Haley’s “Rock Around the Clock,” Little Richard’s “Tutti Frutti,” and Chuck Berry’s “Little Queenie,” which is mixed with interview snippets with Mick Jagger recalling his early rock & roll memories, as well as an inadvertently hilarious short performance from Screaming Lord Sutch, which takes on Spinal Tap-ish proportions (dressed as a ghoul with dry ice blowing in the breeze during their mid-afternoon set in the bright sun, the crowd shows their appreciation by sitting down throughout). Nevertheless, London Rock & Roll Show is a must-have for fans of ’50s rock. ~ Greg Prato, Rovi |

USED: Art of Dying $7.99 Leave it to Bay Area thrash metal pioneers Death Angel to name their recording rebirth, 14 years in the making, The Art of Dying. Oh, the irony! Never ones to play it straight, Death Angel, like their first wave of thrash inspiration, Exodus, shocked their aging fans when they courageously shrugged off the years of rust and returned to active metal duty in 2004. And because they were merely teenagers during their first run, most of the band are amazingly still in their early 30s! More importantly, they’ve done so in style. The Art of Dying, even while bypassing the often Byzantine arrangements heard on the group’s first two albums, manages to maintain the songwriting focus of their third (and heretofore last) effort, Act III, while arguably providing a better all-around thrash experience than the latter. The race is a close one, but there’s no denying that everything about The Art of Dying’s frenetic, scratchy-riffed first track (requisite acoustic guitar intro notwithstanding) “Thrown to the Wolves,” as well as the brilliantly concussive highlight “Thicker Than Blood,” positively screams “old-school” thrash. In fact, except for a few very discreet trad-metal tricks, and the odd hardcore vocal or two snuck into “Five Steps to Freedom,” “The Devil Incarnate,” and “Prophecy,” so does everything else on display here. The reasons are clear for all to see: as in their previous life, Death Angel’s sound continues to be anchored by the intense drumming of Andy Galeon, and the absolutely sterling lead guitar work of Rob Cavestany, who’s so damn good throughout, it’s almost easy to overlook his always eye-popping contributions. Curiously, Galeon tackles lead vocals (with moderate success) on the sprawling “Spirit” (featuring an uncommonly bluesy bridge section), while Cavestany takes over — and we mean takes over — on spectacular closer “Word to the Wise.” Not about to be left out, bass player Gus Pepa jumps in with his own lead vocal for the hit-and-mis… |

USED: Live at Billy Bob’s Texas $3.99 Other than reissues and best-of releases, Live at Billy Bob’s Texas is Gary Stewart’s first new album in a decade, and his first-ever live recording — which seems odd for a performer whose songs seem to be tailor-made for live performance. In the 1970s, Stewart defined what was left of the true honky tonk tradition, and into the ’80s and ’90s continued to write and record quality material, but his style of country music had long fallen out of fashion and he fell into nearly complete obscurity. This is the album Stewart should have cut in the late ’70s — it’s full of 16 stunning examples of what he does best: write and perform hardcore honky tonk country flawlessly with all the piss, vinegar, and passion that much younger men only wish they could muster. There are many Stewart-penned classics in this bunch, including “She’s Actin’ Single (I’m Drinkin’ Doubles),” “Flat Born Good Timin’ Man,” “Single Again,” and “An Empty Glass (That’s the Way the Day Ends).” Of the covers, Stewart’s choices are impeccable: Wayne Carson’s “Drinkin’ Thing,” Sterling Whipple’s “In Some Room Above the Street,” and one of the most moving versions of Danny O’Keefe’s “Quits” ever captured on tape. Stewart’s voice has actually gotten better with age, slightly lower and full of pathos, brokenness, and sheer hell-raising abandon. His band, though unforgivably not credited anywhere in the liner notes, is obviously rooted deep in Stewart’s style of honky tonk country; pianos and pedal steel guitar dominate the proceedings and the rhythm section lays just behind the beat to let the guitars and voices fill the entirety of the space in the middle. The pedal steel player, whoever he is, deserves all the work he can handle for his tasteful, emotionally revealing fills that give Stewart that added ledge to step out on. Despite the fact that has been over 30 years since Stewart first appeared in Nashville, this debut live album numbers among his best. This is essential for fans and se… |

USED: Live at Max’s Kansas City $6.98 There’s a certain amount of disagreement among Velvet Underground scholars regarding whether or not this album, recorded by Andy Warhol associate and longtime fan Brigid Polk on a portable cassette recorder on August 23, 1970, does in fact document Lou Reed’s final appearance with the VU. If this wasn’t his last stand with the group, it was certainly close to the end of the line, and while the performance is technically strong, it isn’t especially inspired, with Reed sounding more than a bit weary. (At this point, the band was near the end of a three-month residency at Max’s, doing recording sessions for Loaded during the day, a schedule that would tax most performers.) The absence of Maureen Tucker on drums (who was pregnant and sitting out the Max’s shows) makes an even bigger difference; the replacement of her steady, tribal pulse in favor of Billy Yule’s busy, sometimes sloppy style does these songs no favors. But there are a few lovely moments, including rare live performances of “After Hours” and “Sunday Morning,” and Reed and Sterling Morrison lock guitars with their usual authority on “Waiting for the Man” and “Beginning to See the Light.” The audio quality isn’t great, but given the circumstances it’s better than you might expect (it’s OK by the standards of an early-’70s bootleg), though historical merit seems to be more the issue than high fidelity. And yes, that really is Jim Carroll ordering double Pernods and asking about the availability of Tuinal between songs. Fun for fans, but 1969: Velvet Underground Live is a much stronger document of this band’s on-stage prowess. ~ Mark Deming, All Music Guide |

USED: South of the Snooty Fox $9.98 Sterling Harrison was a journeyman soul singer who cut his first record in 1955 and spent years on the road, playing clubs across the country and frequently opening for bigger names. Eventually, Harrison ended up in Los Angeles, where he sang at hole-in-the-wall bars and soul food joints on the city’s south side through most of the ’80s and ’90s. Harrison cut a handful of records over the years for labels both big and small, most of which didn’t indicate he was anything special, but a tiny handful of fans were of the opinion he was the greatest unknown soul singer on Earth, and in 2001 a few of them decided to help Harrison make the album they knew he was capable of. And it turns out those fans were right on the money; produced by Los Lobos saxman Steve Berlin and comedy writer and soul music maven Eddie Gorodetsky, South of the Snooty Fox is a revelation, a thrilling set of raw but accomplished old-school R&B that suggests at the dawn of the 21st century Harrison may have been the finest exponent of the music’s classic style alive. While Harrison’s voice is remarkable enough — a strong baritone that could slide into a clear falsetto or a rumbling bass at will — it was his sense of phrasing and showman’s ability to fill a song with energy and sheer belief that really sets him apart, and hearing him strut through a set of lesser-known R&B classics such as “You Left the Water Running,” “There’s a Rat Loose in My House” and “I’ll Take Care of You” with the swagger and spunk of a 20-year-old is enough to turn nearly anyone into a believer. (A moving cover of Tom Waits’ “The House Where Nobody Lives” shows he was just as adept with newer material.) Nearly as remarkable is the accompaniment by Harrison’s live band, the New Breed Band, who are dazzlingly tight and funky throughout. Given Harrison’s failure to catch a break throughout his career, it’s sad but appropriate that shortly after he finished work on South of the Snooty Fox, the singer was diagnosed wi… |

USED: Tal Farlow’s Finest Hour $5.99 Tal Farlow’s guitar work from the 1950s remains exciting, and Finest Hour, consisting of his Verve work between 1952 and 1956, is dazzling. These small-group recordings of bop and cool jazz feature a number of top performers from the era. Bassist Red Mitchell, drummer Stan Levey, and pianist Claude Williamson join Farlow for “There Will Never Be Another You,” “Fascinating Rhythm,” and “How Deep Is the Ocean?” This group blazes through “Tea for Two” at such a quick pace that the tune almost loses its melodic structure (this certainly wasn’t the way Django Reinhardt played it!). Farlow provides a sterling example of the technical competence necessary to play bop by stringing notes together at a dizzying rate. Farlow, bassist Vinnie Burke, and pianist Eddie Costa turn out several lively pieces without the help of a drummer. They offer a sprightly version of Cole Porter’s “I Love You” and a bluesy take on Clark Terry’s “Chuckles.” One of the fascinating qualities of Farlow’s guitar work is his ability to play fast while still retaining a style all his own. He developed a number of techniques (tapping the strings, playing harmonics) but also proved capable of sensitive interpretations of ballads like “Skylark.” It didn’t hurt that many repertoires of the day were filled with standards, complete with distinct melodies, by writers like Irving Berlin and George & Ira Gershwin. Finest Hour is a great collection of the music that made Farlow a jazz legend in his own time. It is also an excellent introduction for those unfamiliar with this amazing guitarist. ~ Ronnie D.
