Corum Vintage spirit trio Ladies Diamond Watch
When Rene Bannwart created Corum in 1955, he was determined to place it in the vanguard of the watch industry. This choice gave rise to some amazing models that have become watchmaking classics, such as the Romvlvs and the Admiral’s Cup, and even full-fledged icons, like the Golden Bridge. Corum has not however chosen to express its creativity exclusively through masculine models, but has also made its creative mark by introducing feminine watches. 2010 provides an opportunity to rediscover three of them, since they are to be re-issued in limited series.
Chinese Hat and Golden Tube. © Marc Ninghetto
The Golden Tube… a 1950s style icon
The first piece in this collection is the Golden Tube, which dates back to 1957. It embodies the inimitable style of the 1950s, a simple and geometrical design that remains imbued with a genuinely fanciful touch, while radiating a uniquely graceful elegance.
Entirely reflecting the spirit of the era, the Golden Tube is in tune with the “Sack” dresses with their straight, pure lines launched by Hubert de Givenchy in 19571.
Golden Tube. © Corum
The Golden Tube – as much a watch as a piece of jewelry – is indeed formed by a 31 mmlong, 14.5 mm-diameter tube that is worn like a cuff-watch. Freely fixed to the bracelet along which it slides, this tube can thus be wrapped around the wrist like a lucky charm on its bracelet. Its polished gold case is surrounded by gem-set lines forming diamond gadroons. Its sides are also set with concentric lines of gems. The model is thus embellished by 342 gemstones in all, totaling 3.58 carats. The case is enhanced by a fluted crown positioned at 12 o’clock and adorned with a white mother-of-pearl cabochon. The dial comes either set with diamonds or in white mother-of-pearl with three diamonds at 3, 6 and 9 o’clock. The model is available in white or Red Gold, and may be fitted with an alligator leather strap or a gem-set gold bracelet. It will be issued in a limited numbered edition of 30 pieces red gold and in white gold.
Once upon a time there was a story of the Chinese Hat
The second re-edition in this trio of Vintage watches was introduced in 1958. Nicknamed the Chinese Hat, its shape does indeed evoke the hat worn by peasants working in the rice fields of the Middle Kingdom. The round case and its sapphire crystal are cambered along the 6-12 o’clock axis, and these curves are accentuated by the diamond-set lines playing around the bezel. The 33 mm-diameter case is studded with 142 full-cut diamonds totaling 2.44 carats.

This watch comes with a white mother-of-pearl dial enhanced by three diamonds or, for those who prefer a more richly jeweled version, a dial entirely paved with diamonds. In order to preserve the pure, smooth lines of the case, the miniature quartz movement is set to time by means of a corrector concealed beneath the case. The watch is available in red gold or white gold with a leather strap or gem-set gold bracelet, and it will be issued in a limited numbered edition of 30 pieces in red gold and in white gold.
Timelessness and elegance are the keynotes of the Round Golden Bridge
The third model re-issued by Corum is the Round Golden Bridge, the most resolutely “horological” of the three, since it beats to the cadence of the legendary C0113 baguette movement. This micromechanical masterpiece was created by Corum exactly 30 years ago.
Accommodating its 140 components housed within a space just 33 mm long, 3 mm high and less than 5 mm thick represents a remarkable feat, especially when one considers that this mechanical hand-wound caliber is equipped with a variable-inertia balance beating at a frequency of 4 Hertz and ensuring optimal reliability and precision. Other refined technical features include a barrel equipped with slip-springs, a 40-hour power reserve, as well as the Solid Gold hand-engraved mainplate and bridges. This model enables connoisseurs to admire its finishing from all angles, due to the fact that its guilloché-work dial is placed not above, but rather on either side of the movement, and also thanks to the transparent caseback.
The large 41 mm case diameter and opening thus fully reveal the caliber in all its splendid majesty. Even the hands are openworked so as not to hide as little of possible of the movement which is truly given pride of place. The Round Golden Bridge will be issued in a limited edition of 75 pieces.
These three Vintage editions forming a decidedly exclusive collection will be available in the brand’s own-name boutiques (in Geneva, Hong Kong and Shanghai), as well as from around ten selected retailers worldwide as of end of October.

A Song for You $11.99 The duo’s best album, and the place to start beyond the hits compilations. Up to the release of A Song for You, the Carpenters’ success had seemed an awesome if somewhat fluky phenomenon, built on prodigious talent, some beautifully crafted pop sensibilities, and a very fortunate choice of singles — their albums Close to You and Carpenters, though they were top-sellers, both seemed just a bit thrown together. Then came A Song for You, a seemingly unified concept album written and recorded during a frantic period of concert activity, and brimming with lovely musical ideas even more lovingly executed, laced with good humor, and enough hits of its own to have established any artist’s career on its own. And even in between the hits, the album was built on material that could have made a whole career for anyone. The duo’s version of a then-new Carole King song, “It’s Going to Take Some Time,” not only became a hit single but helped them in the “cool” department, Carole King being about the hottest musical personality there was at that particular time. One song, “Top of the World,” which Richard Carpenter had only visualized as album track, became an unexpected hit single and one of the most popular songs of the decade. And where the Close to You LP had included some beautiful album tracks (“Crescent Noon,” ” “Maybe It’s You”), A Song for You was dripping with masterpieces, including “Crystal Lullaby” and “Road Ode”; Richard Carpenter’s “Piano Picker,” a confessional piece sung by the composer, also marked the high point of his solo vocal contributions to the duo’s music. Even the two cuts that reach back into the past — the soft jazz instrumental “Flat Baroque,” a 1966-vintage Richard Carpenter composition that he resurrected for this release, and “Bless the Beasts and the Children,” the B-side of “Superstar” from more than a year earlier (written for a Stanley Kramer movie) — slot in perfectly among the new songs. The high point of their rec… |

Crystal Castles $13.98 No matter how much Crystal Castles insist they’re named after She-Ra’s fortress and not the 1983 arcade favorite, thanks to the Atari sound chips in their keyboards, their music evokes vintage video game soundtracks — albeit ones that have been folded, spindled, and mutilated almost past recognition. On their self-titled debut, Crystal Castles (aka Ethan Kath and Alice Glass) hurl eight-bit bleeps, bloops, and noise as relentlessly as Space Invaders marching down a screen, turning these sounds into sometimes chaotic, sometimes moody synth pop with a jagged edge. Though their low-res synths can’t help but sound nostalgic (and song titles like “Air War” and “Reckless” sound like forgotten games), Crystal Castles are fresher, more complex, and much less gimmicky than might be expected, especially for those familiar with only the band’s singles. Granted, those singles are still some of Crystal Castles’ definitive tracks: the darkly, violently catchy “Alice Practice” pits Glass’ serrated but melodic shout-singing against rippling, strafing, and strobing synth onslaughts, and “Crimewave” gives that sound a brooding groove. However, Crystal Castles go wider and deeper on the rest of the album, teetering between order and chaos, noise and melody, and energy and atmosphere in ways that are unpredictable but consistently interesting. Glass is a chameleon, terrifying on one track and kittenish on another. She’s a black-eyed, short-circuiting android on “Xxzxcuzx Me,” singing of “robotic love” as her voice degrades into pixels almost as soon as she opens her mouth, and a spaced-out valley girl bopping to “Good Time”’s deceptively cheery pulse. Indeed, a remarkable amount of melancholy haunts Crystal Castles, from the eerie keening on the Knife-like opening track, “Untrust Us,” to the danceable gloom of “Vanished” and the wistful, almost serene “Magic Spells” — all of which throw freakouts like the claustrophobic electro bump ‘n’ grind “Love and Caring”… |

Reality Has Got to Die $14.98 Brooklyn-based psychedelic hard rock trio La Otracina are obviously heavily influenced by vintage psychedelic rock, Krautrock/motorik, etc., but this album is very much in the stoner metal realm. Drummer/vocalist Adam Kriney (who also runs the band’s label, Holy Mountain) howls and carries on in a vein somewhere between the Melvins’ Buzz Osborne and Cathedral’s Lee Dorrian, and the guitar and bass work of Philippe Ortanez and Evan Sobel, respectively, very much recalls Cathedral’s ’70s-besotted stomping. Blasts of vintage synth add to the retro feel, but these guys are much more than mere sonic archivists. Despite giving their songs titles like “Crystal Wizards of the Cosmic Weird” and “Mass Meteoric Mind,” they’ve got a present-day, down-to-earth, back-alley vibe going that’s strongly reminiscent of Staten Island’s late-’60s/early-’70s proto-metal titans, Sir Lord Baltimore (who also had a singing drummer), while remaining something you could imagine going out to a club and hearing. Their songs have dynamic shifts (from fast to slow, from crushing riffage to gentle, folkish acoustic guitar melodies) that keep the album from being a mere slog like, say, Sleep’s Holy Mountain (to name just one wildly overrated stoner metal disc). These guys aren’t concerned with being hip as much as letting out some of the wildness that’s trapped within them, and that’s the first step to making great rock music. ~ Phil Freeman, Rovi |

USED: I Saw A Bright Light $3.99 The Alabama indie rock outfit Nineteen Forty-Five basically picks up where Together We’ll Burn Like Autumn Leaves left off for a second blistering set of songs. I Saw a Bright Light sticks with Nineteen Forty-Five’s antagonistic view of social conformity, obviously primed for college radio thanks to the pop mess of Will Lochamy’s syncopated drumming and the boy/girl vocal relationship between bassist Katharine McElroy and guitarist Hunter Manasco. However, I Saw a Bright Light doesn’t stay on the dark side entirely. Nineteen Forty-Five depicts an emotional, melodic musical journey that’s challenging, but worth it. A more polished sound reflects the trio’s personal growth as well. If the spiky, punk-powered “She Takes Drugs” isn’t convincing, the haunting tribute of “Sylvia Plath” will do it. This little surf-rock crystal has Manasco’s lyrical poetics detailing the tragic death of one of American literature’s treasures with a heavenly, non-literal ending. Crunchy guitar licks serve the post-adolescent, angst-driven “The Police Let Her Get Away,” while “Make Out in the Dark” admires a crush from afar for a sunshiny rawk tune. I Saw a Bright Light, which was recorded on two vintage reverb units and old tape reels, doesn’t overdo it, for the members of Nineteen Forty-Five were cautious in keeping things strictly rock & roll. It’s not remarkably different from what’s been done before, but it’s an honest indie rock album. Nineteen Forty-Five’s Southern roots don’t work against the band either. ~ MacKenzie Wilson, All Music Guide |

USED: Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World [WS] $2.99 Muhammad Ali has been called the greatest athlete of his century, but he was much more than a great boxer; he was one of the most compelling figures of his time, a leader in the civil rights movement, a fiercely principled man who nearly traded in his career rather than violate his religious beliefs, and a figure of remarkable charm and charisma in a sport hardly known for producing articulate men. Muhammad Ali: Through the Eyes of the World is a feature-length documentary which uses vintage films clips and interviews with his friends, family, and admirers to tell the full story of Ali’s life and career. Celebrity interviews include James Earl Jones, Billy Crystal, Rod Steiger, and Billy Connolly. ~ Mark Deming, Rovi |

In addition to showcasing superb talents of the day like Lou Gehrig, Ty Cobb, and Joe DiMaggio, this program also documents the progression of baseball from its days as a simple form of recreation to its state as a multi-billion-dollar entertainment industry. The vintage film footage and commentary from baseball aficionados Bob Costas and Billy Crystal give the viewer a good idea of what baseball was like when it was a game. ~ Sarah Block, Rovi |

USED: Zoolander $3.99 The Wiseguys give a nice start to this crisp runway commotion. Original corkers are almost always cooler than novelty retreads (duh), and luckily the vintage versions of the immortal “Relax” and the annoying “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go” judiciously appear. Powerman 5000 (minus Luke Cage) later tackles the Frankie classic, aptly demonstrating the aforesaid truism (Do we ever need two versions of any song on one CD?). “Call Me” is already so righteous that Nikka Costa’s carbon-copy remake can’t help but rule. No Doubt sprinkles the right blend of audio porn, perky pop, and smooth disco into another failsafe Moroder stunner, “Love to Love You Baby.” The Wallflowers rework the humorless “I Started a Joke” into an unrecognizable, but actually good, tune. Makes one wonder why Jakob Dylan didn’t just start from scratch. Herbie Hancock’s “Rockit” adds fuel to any collection, and Moby’s claustrophobic “Sub Mix” of “Beat It” wisely submerges with mondo Eddie for the money. Zoolander then becomes an electronic morass, though Orgy and Crystal Method attempt to breach the staticy surface. At any rate, this disc should get your party started right and quickly. Can’t realistically expect much more from a soundtrack, anyway. ~ Doug Stone, Rovi |
